Turns out, there’s a careful science to it. Generally, restaurants figure you’ll eat about a pound of food. To decide how much to charge, they take the average number of buffet customers per day and divide that into their daily buffet food cost. Then they know their average cost per person.

Do a full sweep of what’s on offer – you don’t want to commit too early. No drinks – a glass of Coke costs a restaurant about 15p but you’ll be charged much more. If you’re thirsty, choose free tap water. Avoid cheap food, such as pizza and chips.
Why do people overeat at buffets?
Humans become hyperphagic, i.e. the tendency to eat a great deal of food, when palatable food is readily available. Not only that, we tend to subconsciously prevent others from taking our food source.
